Andrew Muirhead_news_15th_July_2010. Princess Royal launches thermal energy plant

15th July 2010

Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal launches £6m thermal energy plant set to significantly benefit Andrew Muirhead & Son.

On the 15th July, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, visited Scottish Leather Group Limited, of which Andrew Muirhead & Son is a
subsidiary, and officially opened its unique £6m Thermal Energy Plant (TEP)based at its manufacturing site in Bridge of Weir. This is a
world first in the industry, as the Group continues to lead the way in sustainable low carbon leather manufacturing.

The Princess was shown around the fully-commissioned TEP, which will use the 30,000 tonnes of waste generated by the Group's
subsidiaries, to generate approximately 45m kW per year. The power will be used to run the Group's plant, tannery and factory in
Bridge of Weir. Eight new jobs have been created in SLG Technology Limited, which will operate the plant.

Dr Warren Bowden, environmental director of SLG Technology Limited said:
"We are already using a by-product of the beef industry in our manufacturing process to create leather, which is in itself recycling.
However, if you are importing your hides from Brazil and Argentina you aren't doing much for your 'green credentials'.

Higher quality raw materials mean less waste and less intensive processing. We source nearly all our hides from top quality British
beef cattle and apply rigorous standards, buying direct from the abattoir to ensure consistency of the end product.

We even employ someone to work directly with the abattoirs to ensure that we have the best hides possible. We demonstrate our
quality control throughout the entire manufacturing process."

Customer demand can have a major influence on how companies address green issues, and as a supplier to some of the top names
in the airline industries, Andrew Muirhead & Son is subject to the exacting standards expected of a preferred supplier.

Colin Wade, managing director, Andrew Muirhead & Son commented:
"The backlash against air miles also means that our airline customers are looking to demonstrate that they are trying to address the
carbon issue in other ways and we are dedicated to helping them achieve this objective. We supplied leather for the Singapore Airlines
and Emirates A380 Airbus and the trend in mega-aircraft is set to continue. According to Airbus, 1,000 new aircraft are forecast to
come into operation in each of the next 20 years."

Jonathan Muirhead, Scottish Leather Group's chairman added:
"Quite simply, this new plant, which has been 10 years in the planning, will allow us to make leather without costing the earth. The
process will take waste from our subsidiaries, which previously went to landfill, and turn it into heat and steam which the factory
needs for drying leather and heating water. It will also produce oil from the skin grease, which will be used as fuel and the final waste
product, a mineral ash, will be sold on to the construction industry."

The continuous investment in technical innovation throughout the Group has moved their manufacturing process from a craft based
operation to a technology driven enterprise with their own manufacturing IP.

Muirhead concluded:
"The Government guidelines on waste and landfill are quite clear and there is no point in companies ignoring
legislation until it is forced, these issues are not going to go away and we took the decision some time ago to tackle this head on."

Andrew Muirhead_News_18th_March_2010 Factory expansion

18th March 2010

Andrew Muirhead & Son Limited completed factory expansion

Andrew Muirhead & Son Limited, manufacturers of quality upholstery leathers and part of the Scottish Leather Group, has completed
work on its recently acquired additional premises, adjacent to its existing factory in the east end of Glasgow.

The new 10,000 sq ft premises are sited at the corner of Dunn Street and Dalmarnock Road and will be accessed through a service
yard at the rear of the original factory.

Founded over 160 years ago the company has occupied the site since 1870 and employs 100 people in the manufacture of technical
leather which are exported all over the world for a wide variety of applications including aviation, marine, rail and building interiors.

The expansion will provide the company with much needed additional warehouse space as well as "off road" loading bays and
additional parking which will create a safer environment for employees and pedestrians in the vicinity.

The company, which holds an accredited ISO14001 Environmental Management System, is further reducing its carbon footprint and
overall environmental impact by reducing "hide miles" for its hides.

Distribution of hides manufactured for wholesaling is currently undertaken from premises in Burnley to which the hides are transported
by road on pallets.

Warehouse operations in Burnley have now transferred to Glasgow with the creation of five new jobs.

Colin Wade, managing director, Andrew Muirhead & Son Limited commented:

"By making this investment now we are able to secure our future in the manufacturing and warehousing facility in the East End of
Glasgow where we have operated for over 135 years.

The new warehouse will allow us to eliminate palletising which in turn reduces potential creasing and hide damage and will reduce
the need for double transportation by road.

Our hides are hand rolled and the new system ensures more attention to detail when sending to our customers."
