As we celebrate Muirhead’s 185th anniversary, we’re proud to share another milestone in our sustainability journey. Our parent company, Scottish Leather Group, has officially switched on a Solar PV array at the Bridge of Weir manufacturing site, an investment that benefits the group and supports our transition to renewable energy.
The solar PV array generates up to 3.0 MW of clean electricity, reducing overall grid dependency and supporting the production of leather with a lower environmental impact. Covering an area larger than three football pitches with 4,348 solar panels, it is expected to deliver around 24% of our site’s annual electricity demand.
“Over the last two decades, Scottish Leather Group has continuously invested in strategic initiatives designed to optimise and improve the sustainability and circularity of our leather production. With our new Solar PV array, we are taking a step forward in the self-generation of on-site clean power, removing grid reliance, which further supports us as we rapidly accelerate towards achieving our target of 100 percent zero greenhouse gas emissions for our operations.” Dr Warren Bowden, Head of Innovation and Sustainability, commented.

This development reinforces our commitment to circular manufacturing and innovation. From energy recovery and water reuse to pioneering material solutions, sustainability has shaped our approach for generations. By integrating renewable energy, we continue to deliver leather that combines performance, durability, and responsibility.
